Long ago on Wudong Mountain, a local tea farmer discovered several extraordinary tea bushes in his garden. Leaves processed from these bushes yielded surprisingly powerful, remarkable aroma. Word spread fast, and neighbours kept coming, hoping to obtain cuttings. The farmer treasured these trees and feared they might be stolen. To deter others, he pointed to the yellowish‑brown duck‑manured soil beneath the bushes and brushed them off: “There is nothing special about it; it smells like duck droppings.”
This casual remark intended to protect his tea trees endured through centuries. The earthy, jesting nickname turned into its most renowned trademark.
Another version tells us its dark glossy fresh leaves resemble a local wild shrub nicknamed “duck‑dropping shrub”. Locals called its leaves “duck‑dropping leaves”, and the name gradually evolved into Ya Shi‑Xiang.
