The Ruyi pattern has been a symbol of auspiciousness since ancient times. Its value lies in its roundness and perfection, embodying good fortune. Beneath its elegant form lies profound meaning, representing beautiful wishes for吉祥 (good luck), 称心 (satisfaction), and 如意 (fulfillment). The encounter between purple clay and the Ruyi motif has sparked an artistic spark, giving birth to classic Ruyi-decorated masterpieces in the world of purple clay teapots.

In the aromatic Tongxinshe Teahouse, a teapot with unique charm always captures the attention of many tea lovers and purple clay enthusiasts—Wang Yajun's Antique-Inspired Ruyi Small Teapot. Like a treasure tempered by time, this vessel quietly tells the story of purple clay art and the perseverance of craftsmanship.

The Craftsman: Wang Yajun

Born in 1987 in Yixing, Jiangsu—the holy land of purple clay—Wang Yajun developed a deep love for purple clay art under the nourishment of Yixing's landscape and culture. After retiring from the military in 2007, he resolutely dedicated himself to the purple clay industry, studying teapot-making under senior crafts master Hui Ping. Guided meticulously by his mentor, he honed his skills from the basics, day after day, developing a keen perception of clay properties. Each type of clay seems to gain unique vitality in his hands.
In 2023, Wang Yajun became a disciple of Dong Wenwu, diving deep into the creation of fully handcrafted ribbed-pattern purple clay teapots. Immersed in the intricate world of ribbed patterns, he explores innovation while building on tradition, gradually shaping a distinct personal style.

Rare Clay: Zhaozhuang Zhu Clay

As is well known, clay is the soul of purple clay art. As a cherished treasure in our collection, this Antique-Inspired Small Teapot spares no expense in material selection, using Zhaozhuang Zhu Clay—paired with Xiaomeiyao clay as two "treasure-level" Zhu clays among collectors. Unlike ordinary Zhu clay (mined from the surface tender clay layer in small chunks), Zhaozhuang Zhu clay lies beneath the yellow stone layer, emerging as hard ore in large blocks—a rarity. Its shrinkage rate hits 25%-30% (ordinary Zhu clay: only 10%), nearly reaching the limit for Zhu clay. On the teapot body, distinct vertical wrinkles embody the legendary "no Zhu clay without wrinkles." The strong sandy texture sets it apart from ordinary Zhu clay, with rich oiliness. Close inspection reveals tiny black spots—natural marks from iron in the ore, oxidized and brought to the surface during high-temperature firing.

The Unique Charm of the Antique-Inspired Ruyi Small Teapot

This teapot has a capacity of 150cc, with a length of 12cm and a height of 6.5cm—ideal for both display and use. Its shape draws from traditional antique teapots, integrating the Ruyi motif to symbolize good fortune.
The body is round and full, with smooth, natural lines. The gentle slope of the shoulder connects seamlessly to the neck and body. The slightly domed lid fits snugly with the pot mouth, while the delicate Ruyi knob on top adds an elegant touch. The short, stout spout pours smoothly and cuts off cleanly; the ear-shaped handle features graceful lines and a comfortable grip, harmonizing perfectly with the body.
In craftsmanship, Wang Yajun showcases masterful skill: every line on the teapot is precise and fluid, the surface smooth and delicate—a testament to his expertise in clay patting and trimming. The marks of full handcrafting infuse the teapot with warmth, as every step reflects respect for tradition and a passion for innovation.

Market Value

Wang Yajun's Antique-Inspired Ruyi Small Teapot shone at the 2024 Jiangsu Xuzhen Autumn Auction, selling for 13,200 RMB (approximately $1,850). This price not only affirms the work's artistic value but also signals the market's high regard for his craftsmanship.
Now quietly displayed in Tongxinshe Teahouse, this teapot is more than a tool for making tea—it is a treasure blending artistic value, cultural depth, and practical function. Whether for seasoned collectors or newcomers to purple clay, its allure is irresistible. May this vessel meet more kindred spirits who love life and purple clay art in Tongxinshe Teahouse, together writing new chapters of its story.
