Today, I am delighted to introduce a treasured aged tea from our collection — the 2009 Huiyuankeng Old Bush Shui Hsien, supervised by Master Chen Dehua.
When speaking of Wuyi rock tea, Chen Dehua is an irreplaceable legend in the industry, respectfully known as the “Father of Da Hong Pao”. He was also one of the first national-level intangible cultural heritage inheritors of the craftsmanship for making Wuyi Rock Tea (Da Hong Pao).
He settled in Wuyi Mountain in 1963 and devoted more than 50 years to rock tea. He achieved the asexual propagation of the original Da Hong Pao mother trees, brought commercial Da Hong Pao to tea lovers worldwide, preserved germplasm resources of numerous famous Wuyi tea cultivars, and participated in establishing official standards for Wuyi rock tea, reshaping the development of modern Wuyi rock tea.
Throughout his life, Master Chen Dehua abided by ancient tea-making methods, free from vanity. He insisted that terroir is fundamental and craftsmanship is the root. Rock teas personally supervised by him feature balanced, restrained and noble temperament, blending the rocky minerality and floral fragrance of authentic rock tea with great ageing potential. For decades, seasoned tea collectors across the globe have competed to acquire his works. Now that the master has passed away, the aged teas he left behind have become increasingly scarce and precious.
This Old Bush Shui Hsien is sourced from Huiyuankeng, the core Zhengyan (authentic rock area) terroir. Huiyuankeng features deep, misty valleys blessed with fertile land. The ancient Shui Hsien bushes growing here develop a unique mild and elegant character. The decades-old bushes stretch their roots deep into rocky soil, absorbing mineral nutrients from the bedrock, laying a natural foundation for rich, long-lasting tea soup.
Crafted in 2009 by Master Chen Dehua following traditional techniques, the tea has been properly stored for more than ten years. The harshness and astringency of young tea have faded away through slow ageing, evolving into the poised, timeless charm unique to aged Zhengyan old bush tea.
This tea won the Gold Award at the 3rd Collection Cup Aged Tea Competition, making it a classic aged rock tea with outstanding drinking and collection value. When brewed with boiling water, the liquor glows translucent, glossy deep amber. Delicate orchid aroma unfolds gently, intertwined with rich, mellow woody old bush rhyme. The fragrance dissolves fully into the tea liquid, never floating superficially, with lasting underlying charm.
