MATERIAL: Iron pillars are iron-bearing sandstone or shale, mainly from Puli, Huadong, and Pingdong in Nantou, Taiwan, Baodao. They were formed over 2 million years ago and are extremely rare. The stone core is black and gray in color, with the stone skin as heavy as iron, hence the namesake, "Iron pill stone". Iron pill stone has a higher density and texture than an ordinary stone. It is superfine in texture, with a natural beauty reminiscent to one of China's legendary beauties, Xishi; as such, it is also called, "Xishi stone". Iron pill stone, or Xishi stone, is densely distributed with faults and can not be carved directly. Master Lin Zhaofa makes his masterpieces by grinding the stone into powder, which allows for the delicate characteristics of the stone to be shown in his exquisite works. Every piece of work is created with care and attention by the artist.
