Fenghuang Dancong tea has a long history of cultivation. According to the Twenty-Five Histories "Song History·Benji": In the second year of Jingyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (1278), Emperor Bing of Song fled south to Chaozhou. It is widely rumored that Emperor Song was thirsty when he passed by Fenghuang Wuding Mountain. The attendants picked a kind of leaves with a tip like a wren beak from the mountain and cooked it. After drinking it, it quenched thirst and produced saliva. It was highly praised by Emperor Bing of Song Dynasty, so it was widely planted by later generations and called "Song seed" or wren beak tea.
The tea farmers here passed on the seeds from generation to generation until the end of the Qing Dynasty, forming a stable and high-quality variety, which became the tribute tea of the Qing Dynasty. After that, the Fenghuang Dancong tea from Wushan Mountain rarely leaves the mountain. If it is not reserved by the royal family, it is consumed by local tea farmers themselves.
Today, although Dancong is not a national tribute tea, due to its scarce production, most tea farmers who make a living from tea in Fenghuang Mountain love tea as much as themselves, so even if they get some good tea, they are unwilling to sell it. Drinking it by themselves is always unsatisfactory, and it is even more rare to be sold in the market. This is how the saying "Good Dancong does not leave Chaoshan" came about.
