DESCRIPTION: Suan Ni incense holder made by Li Shu, a young artist in Jingdezhen. The incense holders depicts the Chinese God and beast Suan Ni (Suān ní), who originated from the ancient Chinese myth that the dragon was born into nine sons. One of its five shapes, among others, take the form of a lion who infamously smoked. As such, Suan Ni is often depicted on cigarette burners smoking. Ancient Chinese books show that the beast has the appearance of a powerful lion who is capable of eating tigers and leopards. It is for this reason that this very character often appears in Chinese palace buildings as an incense burner.
Jingdezhen artist Li Shu handcrafted this Suan Ni incense holder based on the ancient style of handling/forming exquisite and life-like majestic beasts, thus adding to the vividness and liveliness of the creature itself.
