DESCRIPTION: In 1644, the regime of Ming and Qing Dynasty changed, and frequent wars led to a sharp decline in the export of Chinese porcelain, which made it difficult to meet the huge demand of the European market. In 1656, the Zheng Group of the Qing Dynasty announced a ban on the sea in order to guard against the coastal people's withdrawal from Taiwan, which interrupted the trade between China, Europe, and Southeast Asia. In 1659, Japan seized the opportunity to formally open the era of Japanese porcelain export to Europe through the Dutch East India Company. Since then, the port of Iwanli has been well known to the world, and the name of Iwanli Porcelain has been widely spread.
MATERIAL: There are three characteristics in the variety of Guyiwanli Porcelain: Firstly, it imitates Chinese export porcelain; second, the traditional utensils used to create the porcelain was heavily influenced of by long history of pottery making; third, export-oriented ceramics produced were customarily made per European demands. This particular gaiwan was made in Japan and is more than 80 years old.
